DirecTV vs. Dish Network Review

If you are looking to remove yourself from cable television and finally make the switch to satellite television, then knowing what networks are out there and what they offer is going to be crucial depending on what you are looking for. If you want all of the channels, packages, and various options to choose from and price is not a huge factor than take a look at DirecTV. If you are looking to just get the minimal, with some packages such as movies, then go with the Dish Network as they have cheaper options.  In this review, I will lay out what both companies offer which will give you a better idea of what may be more suitable for your situation. Less Expensive Option: Dish Network offers the following packages: The America’s Top 120 plan costs $24.99 for 120 channels. The America’s Top 200 plan costs $39.99 for 200 channels. The America’s Top 250 plan is $49.99 for 250 channels. America’s Everything Pak is $84.99 for 295 channels including movie 31 premium movie channels which include: HBO, ShowTime, and Cinemax. Perks: Free HD Service for life. Does not have: Disney, ESPNews, Disney HD, and ABC Family. Contracts: 24 months with prices that may increase each year. High Cancellation Fees. More Expensive Option: DirecTV offers the following packages: The basic CHOICE package is $29.99 for 150 channels. The CHOICE XTRA package is $34.99 for 210 channels. Con: You have to pay an extra $20 for HD and DVR Service. The CHOICE ULTIMATE package is $39.99 for 225 channels. This package comes with on demand movies, local channels and what you’d expect as core viewing channels. Con: You have to pay an extra $20 for HD and DVR Service. The PREMIER package is $59.99 for 285 channels. Con: In addition to this package, you will need to sign up for the NFL channel which is an extra $59.99 for 5 months worth. This is great if you’re into NFL football, but not so much for households that are not. Perks:  Low monthly pricing for 12 months of you sign a 24 month (or 2 year) contract. Contracts: 24 months. High Cancellation Fees and $10 a month for HD and DVR Services if you do not buy an XTRA package. As you can see, you get more channels for the price with DirecTV but it will end up costing you more in the long run. However, if you don’t need all the fancy extra channels and packages, then go with the Dish Network as it will serve you well, plus you get Free HD Service! Dish Network offers subscribers the option to have up to 350 program channels that come with all digital pictures and all digital sound with the America’s Everything Pack which has 295 channels, 31 movie channels and your local channels. If you are a big movie buff then you can have up to 25,000 different streamed movies and television shows with video and game rentals from blockbuster as an option. There are more than 100 commercial free music channels, including 60 from Sirius Radio if you are a big music fan. If high definition is what you are looking for, then there are 200 high definition channels that include international channels and most game channels. Business Options. For those of you looking for options for satellite TV for your business, DIRECTV has you covered there as well. Access to over 160 channels, exclusive sports packages like NFL Sunday Ticket (which its cost is $59.99), and they even have international programming options if your business caters to those from different cultures. DirecTV also offers The Genie which is DirecTV’s DVR receiver that allows up to five programs to be recorded at the same time. Two different shows can be watched at the same time with the picture in picture feature, and the Genie offers 1,000 hours of programming. The Genie can also connect with up to four mini Genies, so that the family can watch and record television programs on four different televisions throughout the home.  DirecTV also offers On Demand movies and television shows through their On Demand service and has tablet compatibility. One can watch live television on their tablet; watch all of your previously recorded shows and even activate the Genie recording feature.  Perks: No equipment to buy and free installation. Free HD and HD Receiver if you do not have one Premium channels are free. Access to DirecTV Cinema: This gives you 400 of the newest movie releases and 6,000 additional movies and shows for free.
